01. Age of Adz - Sufjan Stevens

…And out of nowhere, Sufjan decides to come out from hiding and throw at his early awaiting fans his latest release, Age of Adz. Now, you may think I’m being biased by making him #1 because I’m completely in love with him, but, I promise I’m being totally fair and putting my feelings for him aside.

I think we were all expecting the same thing. Our favorite Michigan-born boy strumming his banjo, saluting some state in the U.S. What we got, though, was not predicted in any way whatsoever. So was it a bad thing that he dropped his wings, his large band, and his banjo for auto tune, some Lady GaGa-level costumes, fluorescent-colored tape, and some crazy dance moves? Let me tell you, that’s a big NO. While it’s a completely different sound from what we’re all used to, it’s still as genius as anything Sufjan has ever created. It was no beautifully crafted Illinoise, instead it was an astounding explosion of autotune singing about love. No one can make autotune feel so right, no one except Sufjan. The energy coming out of each song is addictive, it makes you want to get up and move around, it’s bursting with energy. His voice is not a pretty tune, it’s so raw and perfect in its own way. Not to mention, the way he managed to create an almost 26 minute song and make it good. Every minute is magical.

It’s not needed to say that this album is pure gold. I’m glad that Sufjan came out of hiding and I’m glad that he came back strong, very strong.
If you’ve not heard this album yet, do it. Do it now. I know my imploring skills are lacking, but ignore that and just go give it a listen. You’ll enjoy it, this I promise you.
